The new Sydney Fish Market has reached a milestone with the installation of the final roof panel on its 200-metre-long floating canopy.
This achievement signals a shift in focus from structural work to internal finishes, bringing the project one step closer to completion.
Multiplex NSW regional director Daniel Murphy highlighted that the milestone reflected the dedication of the construction team and partners.
“We can’t wait to see visitors enjoying this impressive building when it opens to the public,” said Murphy.
NSW Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper praised the roof’s completion, calling it a testament to world-class engineering and design.
“The roof not only enhances the market’s aesthetic with its magnificent wave-like form now in place, but also the environmental sustainability of the building,” said Kamper.
“It is incredibly exiting to have reached this stage in the build and start work on finishes. We’re on the home stretch now and getting closer to being able to set foot in the new Sydney Fish Market, which will be an icon for Sydney and a destination for all.”

Designed by 3XN Architects in association with BVN, the roof’s supporting structure consists of 594 timber beams, some reaching 32 metres in length, and was completed in December 2024. With over 400 panels, the roof weighs an impressive 2,500 tonnes. Some finishing work, including waterproofing, will take place in the coming weeks.
The project has provided a boost to the local economy, with delivery partner Multiplex awarding more than $670 million in contracts to Australian suppliers for services such as maritime piling, steel reinforcement and roof cassette installation.
The new market will feature a mix of retail, dining and community spaces, including a seafood market, restaurants and a seafood school. It promises to become a dynamic hub for both locals and tourists.
Located at Blackwattle Bay, the project is central to the area’s transformation, unlocking a waterfront promenade connecting Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo, 1,100 homes on the old fish market site, and over 6,000 square metres of public space. The project will also improve pedestrian and cycling links.
The new Sydney Fish Market development supports over 700 construction jobs and is expected to create an additional 700 jobs once operational.
